Feeding your soil
Want stronger plants, fewer problems and better results with less effort? Start with your soil.
Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden. When it’s rich, crumbly and full of life, it delivers water, nutrients and oxygen exactly where plants need them — meaning everything you grow performs better.
Think of great soil as the ultimate plant support system.
What healthy soil looks like
Good soil should feel like soft, dark breadcrumbs — rich and easy to work.
It should:
- drain well while still holding moisture
- retain water like a sponge for dry periods
- allow roots to grow easily
- be alive with beneficial microorganisms
- make nutrients more accessible to plants
When your soil structure is right, plants develop stronger roots and become more resilient.
Add organic matter: the game changer
Improving your soil doesn’t require complicated techniques — just add organic matter.
Well-rotted farmyard manure is one of the best options. It gradually releases nutrients and improves soil structure over time.
How to use it:
- Dig into the top layer of soil
- Apply roughly half a wheelbarrow per square metre
- Let it break down and enrich the soil naturally
Slow-release nutrients for lasting results
For a steady nutrient boost throughout the growing season, use slow-release fertilisers such as:
- bonemeal
- pelleted chicken manure
Apply in early spring (March) and again in late June for continued nourishment.
Finish with a mulch of organic matter to lock in moisture, improve structure and keep soil life thriving.
Build better soil, season after season
Improving your soil is one of the most impactful things you can do for your garden. With the right care, it becomes richer, healthier and more productive every year.
